What is a friability tester?
Used throughout pharmaceutical industry, friability testers measure the difference between the weight of the sample before and after the process in order to check the physical strength of uncoated tablets.
How to measure the friability of a tablet?
Accurately weigh the tablet sample, and place the tablets in the drum. Rotate the drum 100 times, and remove the tablets. Remove any loose dust from the tablets as before, and accurately weigh. Generally, the test is run once.
What is the acceptable percentage loss in friability test?
Acceptable Friability Limit
According to USP, IP, and BP, a maximum weight loss (obtained from a single test or from the mean of three tests) not more than 1.0% is considered acceptable for most products. Chewable tablets and Effervescent tablets may have different specifications as far as friability is concerned.
What causes tablet friability?
Why Does Tablet Friability Matter? Tablets are subjected mechanical shocks during handling, packaging, and transportation. The stress put on the tablets can lead to chipping to weak edges and in extremes, breaking or capping. So, it is important that the tablet has been formulated to be able to withstand this stress.
